When you first hear the word “aura,” what image comes to mind? Perhaps it’s the halo of light around saints in mystical paintings, or the elusive energy field that spiritual practitioners speak of. But did you know that this field surrounding each of us has an extraordinarily refined and complex structure—not one layer, but seven?

Seven Layers of Energy: Seven Versions of You
Imagine seven nested Russian dolls, each one larger and more subtle than the last, yet all occupying the same space simultaneously. This is the structure of the human energy field. Based on years of observation, author Barbara Brennan divides the aura into seven layers, each with its unique function, vibration frequency, and appearance.
First Layer: The Etheric Body
This is the layer closest to the physical body, extending about 0.6 to 5 centimeters from the skin. It’s composed of a network of fine, scintillating the blue light lines, like the scan lines on a television screen, precisely replicating every organ and tissue of the body. Think of it as the body’s “energy template”—this grid structure exists before cells grow, and cells develop according to this blueprint.
If you observe a person’s shoulder in dim light, you might see a blue mist pulsing, about 15 to 20 cycles per minute. This is the etheric body in motion.
Second Layer: The Emotional Body
This layer extends about 2.5 to 7.6 centimeters from the body and is associated with our feelings. Unlike the structured etheric body, it resembles continuously flowing colored clouds. When your emotions are clear and vibrant, these colors become bright and distinct; when emotions are confused and chaotic, the colors appear dull and muddy.
Interestingly, the emotional body contains all the colors of the rainbow. Each chakra at this layer displays a different hue: the root chakra is red, the sacral chakra is red-orange, the solar plexus is yellow, the heart is bright grass green, the throat is sky blue, the third eye is indigo, and the crown is white.
Third Layer: The Mental Body
Composed of even more subtle matter, the mental body extends about 7.6 to 20 centimeters from the body and appears as bright yellow light. When you’re focused on thinking, it expands and becomes brighter.
This layer is structured, containing the forms of our thoughts. Here you can see “thought-forms”—clusters of energy with varying brightness and shapes. The clearer and more focused the thought, the more distinct these forms become. Habitual thinking patterns develop into powerful “formed forces” that ultimately shape your life.
Fourth Layer: The Astral Body
The astral layer serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, extending about 15 to 30 centimeters from the body. It has no fixed shape and consists of colored clouds even more beautiful than those of the emotional body, often infused with rose-colored love light.
When people fall in love, beautiful rose-colored arcs appear between their heart centers. The deeper and longer the relationship, the more numerous and stronger these energy cords become. When relationships end, these cords can tear, causing tremendous pain.
Fifth Layer: The Etheric Template Level
Extending about 45 to 60 centimeters from the body, this layer is the perfect blueprint for the etheric body. Like an architect’s negative—against a deep blue background, it presents all bodily forms as transparent lines.
When the physical body becomes ill, the etheric layer may be damaged, but the etheric template layer supports its reconstruction in its original form. This is the level where “sound creates matter,” making sound healing most effective here.
Sixth Layer: The Celestial Body
The celestial body extends about 60 to 82.5 centimeters from the body and represents the emotional level of the spiritual plane. It consists of soft colors, shimmering with gold and silver luster, like mother-of-pearl.
When we experience oneness with God, the ecstasy of union with all that is, our consciousness has risen to this layer. Unconditional love flows precisely when the open heart chakra connects with the open sixth-layer chakra.
Seventh Layer: The Ketheric Template Level
This is the outermost layer of the aura, extending about 90 to 105 centimeters from the body, like a golden eggshell protecting all the energy bodies. Composed of extremely durable fine threads of gold and silver light, it holds the entire aura together.
Here you can find “past life bands”—colored ribbons completely encircling the aura, related to karmic lessons the individual needs to address in this lifetime. Bands found near the head and neck typically represent the past life most requiring healing in this incarnation.

The Synergistic Dance of Energy Bodies
These seven layers don’t operate independently; they interpenetrate and work synergistically. Layers one, three, five, and seven are structured layers with definite forms; layers two, four, and six are unstructured, composed of continuously flowing matter whose shapes are influenced by the structures they flow through.
Each layer vibrates at a higher frequency and extends farther outward than the one before. To perceive higher levels, we need to enter increasingly expanded states of consciousness. This explains why beginners typically only see the densest first layer—with meditation and practice, they gradually become sensitive to more subtle levels.
Your body, emotions, thoughts, love, spirituality—all of these exist simultaneously within your aura. You are not a single individual, but seven versions of yourself, vibrating, interweaving, and resonating within the same space.
