In the Thoth Tarot’s suit of Wands, the four Court Cards are visual portraits of these very states of will. The suit of Wands corresponds to the element of fire, representing will, creativity, vision, and life force. The Court Cards reveal different levels of mastery in the realm of will — from the Princess who conquers fear, to the Knight with unwavering vision, to the Queen of self-knowledge, and finally to the Prince of limitless creativity. Together, these four cards form a complete map of the growth of will.

The Princess: Mastery of Fear and the Free Spirit
The Princess of Wands is the master of internal blocks, obstacles, and obstructions. She has “the tiger by the tail” — in some Oriental mythologies, the tiger is associated with fear or blocks experienced within one’s nature. The Princess of Wands is a symbol of the free and liberated spirit that lives within each individual.
She moves in new directions without fear — new directions that are energizing, like her sun-wand. She wears the Aries crown as a symbol of the pioneering and adventurous spirit that each of us possesses.

Springtime is a season for renewal and new beginnings, represented by the ram’s pedestal. The Princess of Wands has placed her old obstructions and fears on the altar and offers it as a Spring sacrifice. She can be totally exposed and defenseless because she has nothing to fear.
The Princess of Wands is associated with Aries people in our lives, or the month of Aries (March 21 – April 21), as an important time to express one’s sense of freedom, adventure, and of initiating something new. From the time you draw this card to the month of Aries, you could overcome old fears or obstacles with important Aries people in your life or with important younger women.
If you are a man, this symbol can represent the spontaneous, free spirit that you experience within your own deep nature. It is the part of your anima that does not want to be limited or obstructed by fear. This inner quality can be mirrored to you by spontaneous, adventurous, spirited younger women in your life.
When a person is drawn toward this card, it indicates that some major fear has already been released internally and that there is an experience of renewed energy, spirit, and vitality.
The Knight: Mastery of Visionary Goals and Deep Transformation
The Knight of Wands is committed to the principle of spiritual growth and evolution. He is a visionary and energetic Knight who is unwilling to edit, rehearse, or hold back any part of who he is.
He rides the unicorn horse — a symbol of vision and inspiration that has purpose and application. He represents the power of deep internal shifts and perceptions that are being dynamically expressed. He is the Vision Quester who has attained a significant vision and is mobilizing all energy to actualize it.

The Knight of Wands holds the torch (the Ace of Wands) in his hand to burn out any blocks or obstacles that might stand in the way of his vision. He has the ability to shed old beliefs and to honor the changing perceptions he has of himself and others — symbolized by the reptilian suit he wears. He charges forward, eager to share perceptions and insights which can assist deep changes internally and externally.
The Knight of Wands is associated with fire sign people and the fire sign months: Aries (March 21 – April 21), Leo (July 21 – August 21), and Sagittarius (November 21 – December 21). During these time frames, there is support to initiate something new or to move in new directions. Opportunities to begin new ventures or to apply one’s vision in new ways can come through significant older men or fire sign people.
For women, the Knight of Wands can represent the dynamic part of their inner assertive nature — the animus — that is determined to apply an inspired vision without holding back in any way.
The Queen: The Wisdom of Self-Knowledge and Self-Mastery
The Queen of Wands is the knower of the Self. This symbol represents self-mastery and the process of self-reclamation.

She wears the symbol of Pisces on her chest (the clasp on her cloak) as a symbol of the fluidity and aspiration required to attain self-knowledge — an attribute often given to Piscean people. Her process of transformation and self-actualization is best described by the story she represents:
Before she knew who she was, she had black hair and walked with a panther by her side. As she began to discover who she was, her hair turned brown and the panther changed to a leopard. When she fully realized who she was and began to manifest who she was in the world with her pine cone wand, her hair turned fiery red. At this stage of self-knowledge, she pinched the growth marks of the leopard to prevent it from transforming into a beautiful lion to match her self-knowledge — because she wanted a reminder of the dark places from whence she had come (the spots of the leopard). This myth represents the process of self-discovery and the splendor of awakening to the deepest essence of who we are (the radiant crown).
If you are drawn toward the Queen of Wands as a symbol, you may be in the process of self-discovery or of experiencing more of who you are. This symbol represents the fire sign months (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), or fire sign people in your life who may be your age or older and who mirror to you who you are and who you are not.
The Queen of Wands also represents Pisces people in your life who may be your age or older, or she can symbolize the month of Pisces. With Pisces people, or during the month of Pisces, it is essential that you demonstrate your self-trust and not abandon yourself in any way.
For men, this symbol can represent the inner anima (the magnetic part of their nature) that is committed to trusting internal and external experiences which have revealed self-knowledge.
The Prince: Dynamic Mastery of Unlimited Creative Expression
The Prince of Wands is the dynamic mastery of unlimited creative expression that is totally inspired from deep within.
The reins are casually thrown over the Prince’s hand as a symbol of inspired creativity that is not held back and is free to powerfully express itself. The Prince in this way demonstrates self-trust in letting the creative process flow, not restricting or restraining it in any way (the lion freely pulls the chariot).

There is focus, concentration, and attention to manifest one’s creativity, shown by the contained fire within the chariot. The Prince of Wands represents a deep passion for one’s creativity — the completely unfolded flower within the Prince’s chest. With his phoenix wand and cape, he is committed to growing, expanding, and transforming himself through the creative process.
When people talk about “channeling information” or that they “feel lost for hours during a creative project,” it is an acknowledgment of the inspired creativity that they have experienced — which is represented by the Prince of Wands.
The Prince of Wands is associated with the fire sign month of Leo (July 21 – August 21), or with fire sign people. When you are drawn toward this symbol, it represents your desire to move creatively in new directions with Leo people in your life; or it can mean that in the month of Leo you might find yourself moving in new directions with inspired creative projects.
The Prince of Wands may also represent a younger man in your life — someone your age, one or two years younger, or significantly younger — who is inspiring you to move in new directions with your creativity. This symbol may also represent someone younger in your life that you may be inspiring or motivating to move in new directions to express his creativity.
Sometimes this symbol can mean meeting someone important while traveling or relocating during the summer month of July 21 – August 21, or it can represent meeting someone who inspires your creativity and might provide opportunities that could take you in new directions.
For women, this symbol may represent the inner part of their dynamic nature or animus that is moving powerfully in new directions in order to experience unlimited and inspired creativity that wants to be expressed.
The Four Levels of the Growth of Will
These four Wand Court Cards together depict a complete path of the growth of will.
Beginning with the Princess, we learn to conquer fear and inner obstacles, embracing the spirit of freedom and adventure, offering old limitations as a sacrifice as we bravely move toward new directions.
Moving into the Knight, we master the power of vision and transformation — riding the unicorn, holding the torch to burn away all obstacles, expressing deep inner shifts without holding back.
Reaching the Queen, we attain the wisdom of self-knowledge — journeying from darkness to light, from panther to leopard to fiery red hair, remembering where we came from even as we discover who we are.
Finally, in the Prince, we master the expression of unlimited creativity — letting the creative process flow freely without restriction, growing, expanding, and transforming through deep passion.
These four cards are not a linear destination to be reached once and for all. Rather, they are states that each of us experiences repeatedly in different stages and different situations. Sometimes we need the Princess’s courage and freedom, sometimes the Knight’s vision and determination, sometimes the Queen’s self-knowledge, sometimes the Prince’s unlimited creativity.
Will is not a wild horse to be tamed, but an inner flame that continually awakens, expresses, and transcends itself.
